STEM UNIT: Redox Applications in Wastewater Treatment

Img 1402

This unit was created by Siobhan Curran (Sturgis Charter Public High School) for a Standard Level IB Chemistry class through her 2023 Teacher-in-Residence at the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center (MASSTC) in Sandwich, MA.

This IB Chemistry unit connects oxidation-reduction reactions to real-world applications. It includes practice with balancing redox reactions, as well as the introduction of and practice with Winkler Method problems. Additionally, electrochemical cells are introduced and practiced at the Standard Level. Real world connections include nitrogen and phosphorus cycling as well as some information on waste management. A water quality-related IB exam revision sheet is also available.
