Young Mariner Program Day Camp Counselor
Cape Cod Maritime Museum
The Young Mariner Program is an engaging, hands-on summer camp for children in grades 4-7. Campers explore maritime culture, marine science, and seamanship through multidisciplinary activities in an exciting and educational environment. Running from mid-June through August, the program takes place aboard the Cape Cod Maritime Museum’s vessels and in its classroom, with camp hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m
As a Day Camp Counselor, you’ll lead and supervise campers in marine science and maritime activities, creating engaging STEM-based learning experiences. Working closely with the Camp Director and Boat Captain, you’ll ensure a safe and fun environment aboard the research vessel and on land.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Boat Captain and Camp Director in leading activities aboard the research vessel and on land.
- Ensure camper safety and well-being at all times.
- Help to manage groups and support STEM-based Marine Science and Maritime curriculum (training provided).
- Participate in all camp activities, including recreation and instruction.
- Support camper drop-off/pick-up and handle administrative tasks, clean-up, setup, and site maintenance.
Qualifications:
- Required: Knowledge of boating and comfort on the water.
- Pursuing or holding a degree in Marine Science, Biology, Education, Parks and Recreation, or a related field is preferred (open to juniors, seniors, and graduates).
- Experience in summer camps, teaching, or working with children is preferred.
- Strong teaching skills and the ability to use creative, hands-on teaching methods.
- Patience, adaptability, energy, and a team-oriented attitude.
- Availability from June 23 to August 21, including one week of training (date TBD).
- CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain before start). Lifeguard certification is preferred.
