Do you have an interest in Earth science and climate research? Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is offering a unique opportunity for a high school student to assist in a research project aimed at understanding the role of ice sheets in Earth’s climate system. The project focuses on analyzing ice-rafted debris, (IRD), which helps scientists’ study past ice sheet behavior, and the mysteries of major iceberg discharge events., like the Heinrich events.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with marine sediment samples, specifically sand-sized grains of hornblende, using a microscope to identify and pick out relevant grains for analysis.
  • Follow detailed instructions and perform sieving and picking of these sand grains accurately.
  • Record and track your work in a scientific and organized manner.
  • Collaborate with Danielle LeBlanc, a postdoctoral investigator, for training and guidance throughout the project.

What You Will Gain:

  • Hands-on experience with marine sediments and a glimpse into scientific research.
  • Learn about the importance of ice sheets in Earth's climate and their long-term effects.
  • Work closely with a postdoctoral investigator and gain insight into the research process.
  • Opportunity to contribute to a research project that will be used in iceberg modeling studies.
  • Option to use data from the project for a science fair or other academic pursuits.
  • Opportunity for potential co-authorship on a scientific publication.

How to Apply:

Please submit a brief statement of interest outlining your passion for Earth sciences and any relevant coursework or experiences. Include your availability for a 4 week/20 hours per week commitment (flexible)
