Education Programs Intern

Atlantic White Shark Conservancy

The AWSC Education Programs Intern will play a critical role in delivering our mission to participants in our education and outreach programs. In this position, the Education Intern will assist with AWSC education programs onsite and offsite along with community outreach events.

Internship Period and Schedule: The internship period is from June 2nd through Labor Day. The Education Programs Intern will work 30-34 hours per week, and follow a Monday to Friday schedule with optional Saturday flexibility.

Responsibilities:

● The Education Programs Intern will aid in teaching lessons onsite at the Shark Center as well as offsite for community programs or camp collaborations.

● Engage and educate community members at outreach events. These events can be located on Cape Cod or throughout the New England region, accompanied by the Community Educator or Community Engagement Manager.

● Expected to initiate and facilitate group discussion with audiences of all ages.

● Assist in the planning and development of our AWSC summer programs, with assistance from the Community Educator.

● Create and complete a summer project that aligns with your skills and interest, with guidance from the Community Educator. For example, the creation of a new lesson with an activity.

 Qualifications:

 ● Applicants should be pursuing a degree in marine science, environmental conservation, education, or a related field and have completed 1 year of coursework.

● Must be self-motivated, personable, and hardworking.

● The ability to interact effectively with staff and work both independently and collaboratively in a small nonprofit environment.

● Reliable personal transportation is preferred.

● If selected, interns are required to complete a criminal background check.

Ideal candidates should have experience in and be looking to grow the following skills: 

● Science communication

● Public speaking

● Ability to engage audiences of all demographics

● Ability to spend long days on their feet

● Curriculum planning

● Informal education programming

Training: All Interns will receive intensive and thorough training in marine science topics, education pedagogy, the work of the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. CPR/First Aid training and a media training will be provided. Internship participants will work with various AWSC staff during the training period. This is an unpaid internship, but co-ed housing is provided with the other participating interns. AWSC will work with the candidate’s college or university to complete any paperwork if the candidate would like to earn college credit for this internship.
