Conservation Agent (Part-Time)

Town of Brewster, MA

The Town of Brewster is currently accepting applications for a part-time Conservation Agent. This new position performs a variety of technical, administrative, and permitting work assisting the Conservation Department in environmental protection and administration of applicable laws and regulations such as the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act.

Essential Functions: 

  • Conducts site visits and inspections to ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, permits, and orders of conditions.
  • Responds to inquiries from the public and other Town officials. Provides guidance, education, and assistance in complying with codes and regulations, and an explanation of applicable procedures and submittal requirements.
  • Investigate complaints, research issues and provide data, prepare recommendations and report findings to the Conservation Administrator as applicable.
  • Reviews various applications for completeness and compliance; prepares and issues Conservation permits as appropriate.
  • Processes paperwork and digital records into filing system.
  • Assists in monitoring open permits and enforcement orders. Maintains spreadsheets and databases to track administration and enforcement activities.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge on applicable MA General Laws, wetlands regulations, environmental/ecological science, and assessment techniques/technologies through continuing educations courses.
  • Completes trainings as required for understanding of and compliance with state laws on varied regulations.
  • Assist the Natural Resources Department with other varied functions of the department as needed, including but not limited to land management activities.
  • Performs other similar or related duties, as required or as situation dictates.
  • Performs a variety of responsible technical and administrative-related duties following standard procedures and practices which require the exercise of judgment and initiative to perform duties and complete assigned tasks.

Supervision Received:

  • Employee works under the general supervision of the Natural Resources Director. Supervision Given: None.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education, Training and Experience Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field; and minimum one (1) year of prior work experience in environmental management or related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Additional Information:

This is a part-time, 19 hour a week position, covered under the Town’s Personnel Bylaw agreement, with a starting pay range of $30.70 - $33.55 per hour, starting rate dependent on qualifications and experience.
