STEM Unit: Introduction to Engineering Methods

Intro To Engineering

This unit was developed by Siobhan Curran for an 11th grade Engineering course through her 2018 Teacher-in-Residence at Teledyne Marine.

A knowledge based product development (KBPD) approach to developing individual student projects

This unit is intended for use for at the beginning of an engineering course, an individual research project, or a science fair unit. Students will be introduced to basic engineering concepts and current industry techniques. At the end of the unit, students will have developed a procedure and a timeline for a personal STEM project.

The lessons in this unit focus on providing a brief overview of the engineering process, useful brainstorming techniques, Root Cause Analysis, knowledge gaps analysis, and timeline development. This unit will teach students how to think through problems with an engineering mindset, help students develop personal research plans, and expose students to engineering jargon.

In addition to the guide attached, folders with materials (slides, handouts, worksheets) for the 7 lessons described are available. Please email events@capecodstemnetwork.org for access to the lesson folders.
