On Monday, September 15, Cape Cod Community College’s STEM Starter Academy (SSA) hosted its final event, the STEM Student Research Symposium. The showcase highlighted the outstanding research of nine students from Cape Cod Community College (4Cs) who spent the spring and summer immersed in projects at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
The symposium also marked the conclusion of SSA, as the program’s funding from the Commonwealth’s Department of Higher Education came to an end. More than a closing event, it was a moment of celebration, giving students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to explore research posters, ask questions, and engage directly with the projects.
Presenters shared the stories behind their research, explaining their methods, challenges, and discoveries. Reflecting on presenting his work to the faculty who supported him, student researcher Mike Baldon said:
“Many of them helped make my internship possible, so getting to show them the results, and seeing what others accomplished as well, was really meaningful.”
In addition to sharing their results, the students revealed their growth as problem-solvers, critical thinkers, and communicators of complex scientific concepts. These qualities reflect both their dedication and the hands-on experience they gained during their time at WHOI.
Covering disciplines from Engineering to Environmental Technology, the students’ work highlighted both creativity and rigor. Their accomplishments reflect the strong partnership between 4Cs and WHOI, providing immersive STEM experiences and opportunities to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges.
The STEM Student Research Symposium served as a dynamic platform for students to showcase their research, connect with peers and faculty, and inspire future STEM innovators. The event celebrated the innovation, curiosity, and dedication of each student. As SSA at 4Cs concludes, the symposium stands as a testament to the program’s lasting impact, empowering students through personalized mentoring, authentic research experiences, and guidance that prepares them for future STEM careers.
Jacob Hemeon, a recent transfer to Boston University who returned to 4Cs to present his summer research, reflected:
“It's always an awesome experience to be able to go out and share research! Getting out there and talking about your research with a wider audience is one of the most important parts of science and I'm so glad that the SSA was able to give us a platform to share what we've worked hard on.”
Jacob’s words capture the spirit of SSA, supporting students in developing skills, confidence, and a passion for discovery that will carry into their future STEM pathways.
