The Town of Chatham is seeking a dedicated, driven and knowledgeable candidate to become Chatham’s next Shellfish Propagation Specialist/Assistant Shellfish Constable! Chatham’s propagation program supports one of the most prolific and valuable quahog fisheries in the State. This position is responsible for operation and management of the shellfish propagation program, including oversight and training of seasonal propagation technicians.
The Shellfish Propagation Specialist/Assistant Shellfish Constable oversees and manages all aspects of the town’s shellfish upwelling facility and supervises operation of post upwelling placement. This position aids in enforcement of local and state shellfish regulation, monitoring closed areas, checking permits, measuring catch, and assists with community outreach and education efforts. The Assistant Shellfish Constable assumes the duties of the Shellfish Constable in their absence.
Bachelor’s degree in shellfish biology or environmental science and three years of related experience preferred. Must possess a valid Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License. Knowledge of local shell fishing and the related equipment and techniques, including small skiff navigation and maintenance required. MSOA Constable training preferred and must be successfully obtained upon hire.
Position is 40 hours per week, is subject to tide schedule and may include on-call and overtime responsibilities. Work takes place in both an office setting and in the outdoors in all weather. This position is likely to be called upon to perform expanded or extended duties in emergency conditions. Starting biweekly salary is $2,533.60 - $2,658.40 ($65,789.60 – $69,118.40 annually) depending on qualifications and experience. 3% Cost of Living Salary Increase scheduled for July 1, 2023. Position is covered under the Chatham Municipal Employees Association and is Benefits and Pension eligible.
