Barnstable County department of Health & Environment is accepting applications for the full-time position of MASSTC (Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center) Operator.
Use your diverse skillset and join a team of dedicated professionals as a full-time Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator at the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Technology Center. Located in the heart of Cape Cod, our unique organization is the nation’s premier third-party testing and research facility for cutting-edge innovative/alternative (I/A) onsite septic treatment technologies. You will be called upon to do everything from pump and treatment system operation and maintenance to taking samples daily to grounds maintenance to construction of research projects. Qualified candidates will hold an Associate Degree in engineering, biology or other natural science or 3-4 years of wastewater treatment system operation experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience and have or be able to obtain a Massachusetts Grade 4 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator’s License within six months from hire date.
Professional, scientific, and technical work in connection with the operation of the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center (MASSTC); all other related work as required.
Works under the supervision of the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center Director. Performs varied responsible professional, scientific, and technical duties requiring considerable judgment and adhering to standard methods and accepted practice. Work is performed independently, with specific assignments given; all results are subject to review and unusual cases are discussed with supervisor.

Operates and maintains all wastewater conveyance and treatment infrastructure. This includes but is not limited to maintenance of lift station pumps, bar screens, distribution pumps and manifolds, discharge pumps and pipes, aeration pumps, auto samplers, manual sampling equipment, electronic sensors, data loggers, and computer controllers. Conducts sampling of both treated and untreated wastewater according to Standard Operating Procedures, including both composite and grab samples. Reads and interprets sample analysis results. Enters sampling result data into computer software spreadsheets and databases. Operates and maintains field measurement equipment according to Standard Operating Procedures. Operates and maintains all tools and equipment, including but not limited to lawn mowers, weed trimmers, backhoe, saws, power tools, manual hand tools, and digging tools. Maintains MASSTC grounds including but not limited to lawns , general landscaping, and security fencing. Maintains buildings, including but not limited to minor repairs, cleaning, weatherizing, and painting.
