The Onset Bay Center seeks an energetic and responsible individual to assist the Program Manager with its 2020 sailing programs in Wareham, MA.
Background: The Buzzards Bay Coalition is a non-profit, membership organization dedicated to the protection, restoration, and sustainable use and enjoyment of Buzzards Bay and its watershed. The organization works to improve the health of the Bay ecosystem for all through education, conservation, research and advocacy. Since 2015, the Buzzards Bay Coalition has lead the effort to rehabilitate the historic Onset Bathhouse with the goal of establishing a permanent "Onset Bay Center." Located near popular Onset Beach and Wickets Island, the Center will provide high-quality outdoor exploration programs for thousands of people every year and engage with community members of all ages and abilities in a variety of activities focused on building a connection with Buzzards Bay. The Onset Bay Center aims to promote a connection to the wonders of our local environment, to reinforce the link between Wareham residents and their local maritime heritage, and to create generations of future Buzzards Bay stewards. The Buzzards Bay Coalition is set to open the Onset Bay Center by early June 2020 with both full-day and half-day youth programs as well as evening adult programs.
The Onset Bay Center seeks an energetic and responsible individual to assist the Program Manager with its 2020 sailing programs in Wareham, MA. The season consists of oneweek sessions over the span of seven weeks based out of the newly constructed Onset Bay Center. Courses offered will be Beginner Sailing, Intermediate Sailing, and Adult Sailing using RS Quests. Sailing Instructors will provide lessons to the participants half day and evening programs. Sailing Instructors will work as a team under the guidance of the Program Manager. The responsibilities of the Sailing Instructor include, but are not limited to, the following:
Implement daily lesson plans and course setting based on participants’ abilities and ages.
Assist with check-in/out of participants.
Instruct participants in sailing, seamanship, paddle sports, and maritime skills.
Lead by example as a role model who sets the tone for positive youth development.
Maintain close communication with group leaders to ensure smooth program operations.
Create a safe, comfortable and friendly environment.
Deliver and maintain the three goals of OBC Programming, in order of priority: no one gets hurt, everyone has a positive life experience, develop skills and knowledge.
Ensure a safe environment for all on-the-water and on-shore activities.
Management and care of program equipment and supplies. Qualifications
US Sailing Level 1 Certification required.
Current First Aid and CPR certificates will be needed prior to program start.
Comfort with, and an excitement for, outdoor activities, including swimming, paddling, snorkeling, etc. in various weather conditions.
Experience in sailing instruction, general education, or youth programming preferred.
Strong communications skills including comfort with learners of all ages and strong oral communication & interpersonal skills.
CORI check required. Schedule Detailed schedule will be discussed with the Program Manager.
Programming runs from 6/29 to 8/14 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Occasional evening and early programs possible. Staff Training will be 6/22 to 6/26.
Compensation/Benefits This is a seasonal summer position totaling over 8 weeks and approximately a total of 160 hours. The hourly wage is $15/hour. No employee benefits are provided
