The Buzzards Bay Coalition is a non-profit, membership organization dedicated to the protection, restoration, and sustainable use and enjoyment of Buzzards Bay and its watershed. The organization works to improve the health of the Bay ecosystem for all through education, conservation, research and advocacy.
Since 2015, the Buzzards Bay Coalition has lead the effort to rehabilitate the historic Onset Bathhouse with the goal of establishing a permanent "Onset Bay Center." Located near popular Onset Beach and Wickets Island, the Center will provide high-quality outdoor exploration programs for thousands of people year-round and engage with community members of all ages and abilities in a variety of activities focused on building a connection with Buzzards Bay. The Onset Bay Center aims to promote a connection to the wonders of our local environment, to reinforce the link between Wareham residents and their local maritime heritage, and to create generations of future Buzzards Bay stewards. Position Description The Onset Bay Center seeks an energetic and responsible individual to provide sailing instruction for our fall afterschool and family programs in Wareham, MA. The season consists of weekly instructional sessions for youth and families over the span of six weeks based out of the newly constructed Onset Bay Center. Courses offered will be Intro to Sailing Optis- Ages 8-12; Intro to Sailing RS Quests and Jr. Instructing- Ages 13+; Intro to Family Sailing; and Family First Sail. Sailing Instructors will provide lessons to the participants in the afternoon, evenings, and on Saturdays. Sailing Instructors will work as a team under the guidance of the OBC Director. The responsibilities of the Sailing Instructor include, but are not limited to, the following: Implement daily lesson plans and course setting based on participants’ abilities and ages. Assist with check-in/out of participants. Instruct participants in sailing, seamanship, and maritime skills. Lead by example as a role model who sets the tone for positive youth development. Maintain close communication with group leaders to ensure smooth program operations. Create a safe, comfortable and friendly environment. Deliver and maintain the three goals of OBC Programming, in order of priority: no one gets hurt, everyone has a positive life experience, develop skills and knowledge. Ensure a safe environment for all on-the-water and on-shore activities. Management and care of program equipment and supplies. Qualifications US Sailing Level 1 Certification preferred. The Onset Bay Center is willing to reimburse candidates who complete their Level 1 certification to qualify for this position. Current First Aid and CPR certificates will be needed prior to program start. Comfort with, and an excitement for, outdoor activities, including swimming, paddling, snorkeling, etc. in various weather conditions. Experience in sailing instruction, general education, or youth programming preferred. Strong communications skills including comfort with learners of all ages and strong oral communication & interpersonal skills. CORI check required. Schedule Detailed schedule will be discussed with the Program Manager. Staff Training will occur on the afternoons of 9/8/2020 to 9/10/2020. Programming runs from 9/14/2020 to 10/30/2020. Compensation/Benefits This is a seasonal fall position totaling over 8 weeks and approximately a total of 160 hours. The hourly wage is $15/hour.
