Background:

The Buzzards Bay Coalition is a non-profit, membership organization dedicated to the protection, restoration, and sustainable use and enjoyment of Buzzards Bay and its watershed. The organization works to improve the health of the Bay ecosystem for all through education, conservation, research and advocacy. Since 2015, the Buzzards Bay Coalition has lead the effort to rehabilitate the historic Onset Bathhouse with the goal of establishing a permanent "Onset Bay Center." Located near popular Onset Beach and Wickets Island, the Center will provide high-quality outdoor exploration programs for thousands of people every year and engage with community members of all ages and abilities in a variety of activities focused on building a connection with Buzzards Bay. The Onset Bay Center aims to promote a connection to the wonders of our local environment, to reinforce the link between Wareham residents and their local maritime heritage, and to create generations of future Buzzards Bay stewards. The Buzzards Bay Coalition is set to open the Onset Bay Center by early June 2020 with both full-day and half-day youth programs as well as evening adult programs.

Position Description:

The Onset Bay Center seeks an energetic individual who has experience with youth to coordinate, and deliver coastal ecology and on the water programs at the new Onset Bay Center in Wareham, MA. These programs aim to foster discovery, connection, and active stewardship through the Onset Bay Center Summer Programs. The position reports to the Program Manager.

The responsibilities of the Program Lead include, but are not limited to, the following:

 Plan & coordinate logistics, and manage the delivery of the Coalition’s Onset Bay Center programs, including:

o Assist in the training of Program Educators.

o Provide direction to and oversight of the Program Educators.

o Provide hands-on, outdoor exploration programs for youth, ages 7-12 in Onset Village, Wareham, MA. Programs are designed to provide an introduction to coastal ecology, swimming, sailing, snorkeling and kayaking, and to build a connection between youth and their local environment.

o Coordinate with program partners including but not limited to the YMCA staff.

o Set up program sites ahead of scheduled sessions.

o Ensure a safe environment for all on-the-water and shoreside activities.

o Management and care of program equipment and supplies.

Qualifications:

 Comfort with, and an excitement for, outdoor activities, including swimming, paddling, snorkeling etc.

 Experience managing volunteers, interns, and others.

 Strong communications skills including comfort with learners of all ages and strong oral communication & interpersonal skills.

 Comfort working outdoors in various weather conditions.

 CPR and First Aid certifications.

 At least three years of college; undergraduate degree preferred. Degrees in education, marine or environmental science preferred but not required.

 Knowledge of Buzzards Bay, watershed ecology, and familiarity with local and regional environmental issues preferred.

Compensation:

This is a seasonal, full-time summer position totaling ~320 hours over 8 weeks. Salary is $18/hour. No employee benefits are provided. Work week is Monday-Friday, 8:00am – 4:30 pm, with programs taking place June, 29th 2020 – August, 14th 2020. Occasional evening and early morning programs possible. Training will take place the week of June 22nd, 2020 – June 26, 2020
