Part-time Helper - Geology & Geophysics

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently seeking a Part-Time Helper to join the National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (NOSAMS) facility. This is a temporary, casual, non-exempt position eligible for casual benefits.

This position is approximately 20 hours per week beginning in June through August (pending COVID restrictions); daily afternoons Monday-Friday with potential to extend into the fall with reduced hours.

NOSAMS provides radiocarbon analyses at natural abundance levels to the research community. The position will assist NOSAMS staff with water sample receiving and logging, minor laboratory work, and other tasks as deemed necessary.

Essential Functions

  • Receiving and logging chilled water samples according to contracted protocols
  • Cleaning and organizing labware
  • Preparing (cleaning and drilling) cathodes for use on the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry system
  • Sample archiving
  • Other tasks deemed necessary by supervisor

Education & Experience

  • Working towards a High School Diploma
  • High School lab experience is a plus

Special Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience with Excel
  • Good communication skills

Physical Requirements

Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to occasional/prolonged standing/walking, repetitive motion (using the computer & general office equipment), and use of hands for basic grasping and basic/fine manipulation and lifting of up to 30 pounds. Visual requirements to include depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors. Communication requirements include ability to hear and talk to others, on the phone and in-person; working around and with others. This position may be exposed to laboratory chemicals and solvents. Physical duties are subject to change.
