Caines Arcade

The Cape Cod Regional STEM Network is launching our annual Winter STEM Design Challenge: The Cape Cod Cardboard Challenge. We are excited to invite the Cape Cod Regional STEM Network’s community to participate in our Cape Cod Cardboard Challenge, inspired by the Imagination Foundation’s Global Cardboard Challenge. The cardboard challenge is a worldwide celebration of child creativity, inspired by the short film, “Caine’s Arcade.”

This year’s winter challenge will engage children in grades 1-8 from all over Cape Cod and the Islands in STEM-based creative play. Kids will design and build working arcade games from cardboard, recycled, and other basic materials--using the engineering design process, and fueled by their imagination and creativity!  Through the engineering design process, students will gain the opportunity to build a foundation in STEM thinking and problem-solving skills.

The Cape Cod Cardboard Challenge will kick off January 15th and end March 1st. Throughout the Challenge, students will collaborate to design and build arcade games out of cardboard. This could be a claw machine, ski-ball, basketball hoops and whatever they can imagine! Send us your completed entry forms and a short video describing your arcade game and design process by March 1, 2018. (See attached materials for further information in the Resources Box.)

Three winning teams will receive one free field trip to Wackenhammer's Arcade STEAMuseum for their class and a suitable number of chaperones (travel fees are included). Wackenhammer's Arcade is on Main Street, Hyannis, and is dedicated to the Science of Play. The winning class will play in the arcade for an hour on 60+ STEM -based arcade games, explore some of interworkings the games with Prof. Wackenhammer himself, and ride on the 1956 carousel.
